How to make your living room feel more cosy

Creating cosiness at home can often be achieved by simply "shopping your home" and utilising existing items you already own and love, to create a snug atmosphere without the need for many (if any) additional purchases.

The primary objective of these strategies below is to reduce the effect of too much hard or shiny surface area within your space. By introducing more tactile elements, you will enhance comfort and significantly improve the overall cosiness. These ideas will help you understand what can be achieved using your existing pieces, and also give you some hints as to what you might like to invest in, to dial up the cosy factor further!

Reposition Your Area Rug

Place your rug under the front legs of your main seating area (instead of leaving a gap of floor). This simple adjustment, particularly effective on wooden floors, softens the conversation area, making it more inviting and, of course, cosy.

Reposition Your Seating

Bring your seating pieces closer together to create a more intimate conversation area. Rather than having furniture pushed against the walls, try pulling them into the center of the room (or at least away from the walls slightly). This not only creates a cosier space, but also can make the space feel surprisingly larger by allowing the eye to move beyond the seating area.

Refill Your Cushions

Revitalize your cushions by adding extra filling. Consider merging two cushion fillings into one cover for a plump and refreshed look, this will add both comfort and visual appeal.

Add Visual Interest and Textures

Look around your home for items that resonate with you and introduce them into your space to create more visual interest. Textured throw blankets, cushions, baskets, lamps, and artwork all contribute to a layered and textured effect that creates a more inviting and cosy living room.

Consider Your Lighting

Use lamps which emit softer more ambient lighting instead of harsh overhead lights, as this will instantly improve the sense of cosiness. Position lamps strategically to create reading nooks or cosy corners, or to emphasise a piece of art work, or a collection of accessories. Consider placing lighting in front of a piece of art on a side board to add depth and interest.

Candles

We can’t ignore candles when talking cosiness! They provide a lovely feeling of warmth and soft ambient lighting, perfect for creating a snug environment. Once I even found an open fire video on YouTube and played it on my TV. Hilarious, but surprisingly comforting! I dare you to try that one!

Introduce Darker Colors

Darker hues add depth and warmth to a room. Consider swapping out your summer cushions and using darker-colored cushions which complement softer textured cushions.

Add Pops of Sheen

Although the way to create a more cosy space is to reduce the amount of sheen, metallic or glass accents can inject energy and visual interest into a space - making it feel inviting and more inspiring (spaces can feel too flat without any sheen). Experiment with metallic trays, glass vases, mirrors, or cherished china pieces to add a touch of sparkle amidst soft textured finishes.

Incorporate More Plants and Greenery

Plants not only introduce texture but also infuse vitality into a room. Consider bringing more pot plants into your living space or incorporating greenery from your garden to add freshness and texture for coziness.

Make the Layout Functional

Ensure that your space is not only cozy but also functional for your needs. Experiment with furniture placement to accommodate activities like entertaining or reading, and prioritise storage solutions to keep clutter under control.

By implementing these quick and easy strategies, you can instantly re-energise your space, transforming it into a cosy sanctuary where you can relax and unwind.

Here’s to feeling happier at home!
