How to create a relaxing soul space at home
After a hectic day at work, your home becomes your solace. But a home environment that is unwelcoming or uncomfortable, can’t possibly promote deep relaxation we need to rest and restore.
Our external environment has a significant impact on our head space, and how we feel about life. Living in a calm and relaxing home that inspires you, increases resilience and your overall sense of well being.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, here are a few easy tips for creating your own soul space so you can come home and relax.
Tips for setting up your own soul space
Create a space for relaxation. If you don’t have an entire room to relax in, then perhaps just a corner of the room with a comfortable chair, a lamp and some cushions. It's really important to have somewhere comfortable to hangout at the end of the day.
Feel the solace and peace in this spot with a book, music or a meditation, and make this spot strictly gadget free from a certain time each evening – say an hour before bed. Having a spot where we literally unplug gives us a chance to relax more fully.
Here are a few tips for setting up your soul space.
1. Get comfortable
Having a comfortable space to curl up is really important. Somewhere to go when we need to unwind. Do you have a spot you can set up that gives you a sense of solitude and calm? Find a comfortable chair, decide on the spot, and then go about decorating your space.
2. Surround yourself with things you love
What is one colour you're often drawn to and find completely yummy? Do you like bright colours or do you prefer soft, muted shades? How can you incorporate or emphasise this colour or colours into your soul space? I adore deep teals, and have a combination of teals, pinks and greens in my living spaces which I love. I find them so relaxing. Colour has a huge effect on our mood. Surround yourself with colours you love.
If you have space available, create a display of items that you love. Clusters of items always look much more effective than an item on its own. I love using trays to create displays with impact.
3. Candles and fragrance
There's something so relaxing about spaces that smell delicious. Treat yourself to a gorgeous fragrant candle, or essential oils. I love the mood they set - one of tranquility and relaxation. If I'm feeling a little strung out, essential oils or scented candles are my go to.
4. Plants
Plants at home give a different look as well as refresh the ambience. The oxygen from the plants helps to de-stress at all levels. There are a lot of varieties of indoor plants available these days. My favourite at the moment is the parlour palm (and it's pretty easy care). I also love Maidenhair Ferns although they can be a little harder to look after. Pick a plant, find a special pot and let it enhance your soul space.
5. Lighting
Low lighting in the evening really helps set a relaxing mood as you wind down after a busy day. I love using lamps as they make the space feel cosy and intimate. Find a table lamp or a floor lamp to read by, and your soul space will be complete. Enjoy!
Always remember a clean home is a paradise after a hectic day. Try to make your home a peace haven with the above tips. How do you de-stress your home environment?
